‘the essence of hope’ is a dance piece inspired by the true story of a young Panamanian dancer who overcame the social disadvantages of being born in one of Panama's poorest neighbourhoods. Through dance, he found a new way of expressing himself and is able to communicate his passion to other young kids, ultimately creating the chance for a new future for himself and others.
This story tells us how to overcome fear and hopelessness by striving towards a new goal and how this action can make young people stronger. Foregoing fear and hopelessness for the chance of something new affects the way individuals see the world and the way the world sees them.‘the essence of hope’ is a statement about dreams, friendship, solidarity, commitment, humanity, love, faith, dedication, trust, self-confidence, community, tolerance, and finally how all these sentiments relate to hope.
Hope alone does not propel us to our goals. We need all of the above so we can have hope and turn it into something real. ‘the essence of hope’ is the story of José Garrido from Panama and it will stand for the stories of all the other children who want to change their lives.
This project is a co-production between ‘tanztheater compagnie annesophie fenner’ from Switzerland and the program ‘Enlaces’, Director Analida Galindo, from Panama.
ENLACES was founded in 2010. It is a preventive program for children and youth living in vulnerable communities where contemporary dance becomes a tool for personal and social change, seeking to create a culture of peace.
Enlaces offers its beneficiaries a safe environment where they learn to respect themselves and their peers through the performing arts and helps them to model their personality in a positive way and to build healthy social interactions.
The aim of the program is to grow as a local and regional cultural reference through the education of a young generation who participates in a very active way to become protagonists of social change through art.
